Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in the western section of the district. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Bust two men reportedly hiding in a garage
Two 18-year-old South Side men were charged with criminal trespass to land after they were arrested in the 5900 block of South Natoma at 8:09 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18.
Michael D. Charles, of the 8200 block of South Marquette, and Earnest Lee Lockett, of the 7600 block of South Maryland, were apprehended after they were found hiding in a garage, a CPD spokesman said.
They were found by police combing the area after an 18-year-old Clearing man was shot in the left thigh as he scuffled with four men during a crime that occurred outside a multi-unit residential building in the 6100 block of South Oak Park at 7:14 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18.
The victim told police that he had been “serving dope” to the men when they attacked him before running away south. The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. He also had a cut over his eyebrow.

controlled substance after he was arrested at his home in the 5500 block of South Oak Park at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, December 18.
Hector Ivan Montes was apprehended by police executing a search warrant, according to a CPD spokesman, who declined to say what illegal drugs were allegedly found and confiscated.
According to public records, Montes was arrested last August near 56th and Springfield and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a large quantity of cannabis.

A 43-year-old Joliet man was charged with violating an order of protection after he was arrested at a home in the 5700 block of West 63rd Street at 7:20 p.m. Friday, December 20.
Agustin Avila, of the 1100 block of Ann Street, was apprehended without incident.
The victim was a 40-year-old woman, a CPD spokesman said, without elaborating.
Burglars fail to smash their way into Archer Liquors
A quartet of burglars tried but failed to smash their way into Archer Liquors, 5996 S. Archer. Surveillance footage showed that the crime occurred at 2:08 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27. A gray GMC Acadia (with license plates from a different vehicle) pulled into the parking lot. Four men exited the vehicle, and one used a crowbar to try and smash the front door glass, as well as a front-window pane. He damaged the door and panes of glass, but failed to gain entry. All four men then sped away east on Archer. The would-be burglars appeared to be black men ranging in height from 5-foot-5 to 6-foot-1. All were wearing hoodies. One of the hoodies had “What is Real Will Prosper” written on the front. The store reportedly was burglarized earlier in December, as well as on Halloween.

A 29-year-old Clearing man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 5800 block of West 64th Place at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, December 12.
Omar Hernandez allegedly punched a 28-year-old woman and pushed her into a bathroom door, a CPD spokesman said.
Thugs shoot at man's vehicle
A 28-year-old Garfield Ridge man was not injured after a gunman fired at his car as it sat parked at 65th and Keating at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26. The victim told police that the gunman fired from a passing Chevy Cruz or Malibu, which then sped away east on 65th Street. The victim’s vehicle was hit three times: twice in the hood area and once through the front windshield. The victim said the gunman’s vehicle was driven by a Hispanic woman, but there was no description of the shooter.

A 31-year-old Auburn Gresham man was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle after he was arrested in the 4500 block of South Lawler at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, December 21, during a traffic stop.
Asae Phelan, of the 8600 block of South Damen, was reportedly driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen.
According to public records, Phelan has been arrested four times by CPD since 2014 on charges that included possession of a controlled substance and drinking alcohol on the public way.
Smashed their way in, swiped money from ATM
Burglars smashed the front-door glass of Gallardo 1 Stop Services, 5306 S. Pulaski, entered and broke into an ATM. The crime occurred at 3:09 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27. Police said it was initially unclear how much cash was stolen from the machine.

A 25-year-old West Lawn man was charged with DUI, as well as driving without a license, after he was arrested in the 4900 block of South Pulaski at 6:32 p.m. Sunday, December 22.
Jose Antonio Duran Carrizales, of the 3700 block of West 60th Street, was reportedly found by police, slumped over the wheel of his vehicle, which was still running.
Stole his remote, then burglarized his garage
Burglars entered a vehicle parked at the curb in the 5500 block of South Nashville, stole a garage-door remote control, used it to open a nearby garage, and then stole about $40 cash from a vehicle parked inside. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 49-year-old man, at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 when he looked out his home’s back window and saw a light on in his garage.
Stuff missing from home, man claims
A 53-year-old Garfield Ridge man told police that his home in the 5700 block of South Meade was burglarized and that a library card and a gym membership card were stolen. He said he discovered the crime at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, and that he had left his home’s doors unlocked.
