Charge Man With Shooting Dog

A 19-year-old Hearst area man was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal after he was arrested in the 5400 block of South Archer at 11:01 p.m. Sunday, September 24.

Darrick Bender, of the 4400 block of South Lawler, allegedly shot a dog in the 5000 block of South La Crosse minutes before his arrest.

Bender also was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card.

Police said they recovered the weapon they say Bender used.

Bender is due at a detention hearing today.

Police declined to release any other information, including about the dog.

According to public records, Bender was arrested by CPD in August in the 5000 block of West 45th Street and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
