A Fun (and Fast!) Way to Support All 23,000 Special Olympics Athletes in Ill.

There are any number of fundraisers that benefit Special Olympics Illinois, but none is faster or more exciting than the Five-O at the Dirty-O, the annual stock car race at the famed Dirt Oval 66 racetrack (known to fans as the Dirty-O) in Joliet.

Five-O at the Dirty-O is a charity race featuring law enforcement officers from across the state, racing stock cars decked out to look like police cars.

This year's Five-O at the Dirty-O is set for Saturday, July 23. Want to be there in person? Gates open at 3 p.m., and a pre-event party starts at 4. The race itself starts at 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit dirtoval66.com/events-2/.

It's a lot of fun and 100% for Special Olympics Illinois.

But if you're not going to be there in person yet want to support the event (and therefore, support Special Olympics Illinois), you'll be interested to know that Chicago Police 8th District Commander Bryan Spreyne will once again be one of the drivers in the race.

Commander Spreyne is asking for support. All you have to do is make a donation to Special Olympics Illinois.

Each donation helps provide the more than 23,100 individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to train and compete in Special Olympics competitions and programs in Illinois, free of charge.

Your donation will also help Commander Spreyne start a little closer to the top spot on the track, because race positions are determined by which driver raises the most funds.

Commander Spreyne grew up on the Southwest Side, near 61st and Kedzie. He attended Nazareth Lutheran School at 60th and Spaulding, then Ashburn Lutheran School at 83rd and Homan. From there, he went to Marist High School, graduating in 1991.

A self-described “car guy” who once considered a career as an auto mechanic, he has raced in Five-O at the Dirty-O before.

Archer Avenue Cruise a Success

A big thank you to the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch and the Garfield Ridge Chamber of Commerce for once again hosting an Archer Cruise Night.

Hundreds of car-loving men, women and children turned out Friday night, June 10 along Archer Avenue in Garfield Ridge for the annual "Archer Cruise Night" auto show sponsored by the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch and the Garfield Ridge Chamber of Commerce.

Plenty of oohs and aahs as men, women and children showed their appreciation for a wide range of cool, classic vehicles: from modern muscle cars to 100-year-old Fords to a 1950s Good Humor ice cream truck, and more.

Several food trucks were on hand, doing a brisk business, as the success of this annual event picks up steam like a drag racer approaching the flag.

Beyond the obvious fun, the purpose of the event was to show everyone that, given a good reason, people from the neighborhood (and beyond) will come to Archer Avenue and spend money--and that therefore, it can easily be a vibrant commercial strip--and is a good choice for businesses looking for a profitable location.

We at the Southwest Chicago Post were there with a camera, briefly, and are pleased to share a few images.

Paper Shredding, Electronics Recycling, Med Take-Back Event Coming June 15

 Looking to get rid of unwanted yet sensitive documents (like old

utility bills, medical records, tax returns, Social Security/pension statements, etc.)?


Looking to get rid of unwanted, outdated prescription drugs?

Then make plans to head over to Highlanders Hall, 4808 S. Archer, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 15--where 14th Ward Alderman Edward M. Burke will host a paper shredding/drug take-back/electronics recycling event.

Papers to be shredded should be free of staples and binders.

The prescription drug take-back is sponsored by the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Meds should be in their original containers or a sealed plastic bag. Not accepted are liquid meds, anything in an aerosol container, medical waste (including used gloves, masks, syringes, needles, lancets, tubing, IV bags) and illegal drugs.

This event is also an electronics recycling event. Bring your unwanted electronics (but no TVs, please). Examples of electronics accepted are old cables, cellphones, computers, printers, DVDs, stereos and microwave ovens.
