Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 37-year-old West Elsdon woman was robbed at gunpoint as she loaded groceries into her car after shopping at the Jewel/Osco at 5320 South Pulaski at 8:24 a.m. Monday, December 3.

The woman told police she was in the parking lot when a thug walked up, waved a pistol and said "Give me your money."

Understandably frightened, the woman replied "OK, just don't hurt me." The robber then said "Just give me your money."

The woman took $30 cash from her wallet and handed it over. The criminal ran away south through the parking lot, jumped into a black or dark blue auto and sped away south.

The victim was described as a black man age 25-30, 5'4 and 200 pounds, brown eyes, short black hair, medium complexion, wearing blue jeans with white stitching on the back pockets.

A 20-year-old Vittum Park man was robbed on a sidewalk near 47th and Tripp at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 2.

A thug walked up and asked "What you got on you?" The victim replied "Nothing."

The criminal them reached for his waistband, implying he had a weapon, and said "Don't make me shoot you." The victim said there appeared to be a metallic object---possibly a gun---in the waistband. He surrendered his cell phone, and the thug ran away northbound.

The robber was described as a black man age 25, 5'7 and 150 pounds, brown eyes, short black hair, dark complexion, a tattoo near his right eye and a tattoo (flames) on his left hand.

Burglars entered the front door of an apartment near 63rd and Kildare and stole a laptop computer, a Nintendo DS video game console, a Nintendo Wii, a PlayStation PSP, a cell phone, a camera and assorted jewelry.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 34-year-old woman, when she came home at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 4 and saw her front door ajar.

Burglars forced their way through a window of a garage near 61st and Nashville and stole a power washer.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 29-year-old man, at 5:30 a.m. Monday, December 3.

Burglars forced open the back door of a second-floor apartment near 67th and Pulaski and stole a wedding band, a bracelet and three bottles of cologne.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 37-year-old woman, at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 3 when she finished eating breakfast in the first floor unit and went back upstairs.

A video surveillance camera captured images of the burglars, despite their effort to push it aside. One burglar appeared to be a white Hispanic boy or man, olive complexion, wearing a blue hoodie, blue jeans, white gym shoes, and blue gloves with white palms. The other crook appeared to be a boy or man wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans and red/black gym shoes.

The victim told police this was the second time the apartment has been burglarized this year. The first time, back in April, was reported by the Southwest Chicago Post.

Burglars broke through the service door of a garage near 55th and Merrimac and stole a lawnmower.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 28-year-old man, when he came home at 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 3 and saw the door off its hinges.

Burglars pried open a side basement window of an apartment near 62nd and Menard, entered and moved around several valuable items; but apparently fled without stealing anything.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 26-year-old man, when he came home at 11:15 p.m. Monday, December 3 and saw the window open.

Burglars forced open the service door of a garage near 62nd and Parkside and stole four car tires and rims.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 31-year-old woman, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, December 1. Police said they planned to review surveillance video from a nearby camera.

Burglars removed the glass from the window of a garage near 51st and Melvina, entered and stole a snow blower, a circular saw and an air compressor.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 55-year-old man, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, December 1.

Burglars pried open the service door of a garage near 63rd Place and Natchez and stole a lawnmower.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 50-year-old woman, at 3:50 a.m. Monday, December 3 after she saw a back yard "motion" light on. Police said they may review surveillance video from an apartment building across the alley.
