Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Swift work by alert police on patrol has resulted in the arrest of two Chicago Lawn gangbangers on burglary charges.

Victor Sandoval, 25, and Martin Sandoval, 22, of 61st and Rockwell were nabbed by police
Victor Sandoval
as they allegedly burglarized a garage near 60th and Monitor.

At 1:56 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, police spotted two bicycles in an alley. They saw an open back gate nearby. Upon investigation, they heard noises coming from a yard.

They said they then saw Victor Sandoval standing in a back yard and Martin Sandoval exiting a garage via the service door.

Martin Sandoval
Victor was taken into custody; but Martin reportedly bolted, hopping fences as he fled north towards 60th Street. A short time later, police caught up with him in a yard at 6005 South Monitor. He was arrested.

Both suspects were searched by police. Victor allegedly was in possession of two automatic garage door openers belonging to the victim. Martin reportedly had two phone chargers belonging to the victim. The items were returned to their owner.

After his arrest, Martin reportedly complained, "I don't know why we're going to jail. Didn't they (victim) get their stuff back?"

Police said both Sandovals are admitted gang members.
