Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 56-year-old West Lawn man is in custody after he allegedly robbed the Walgreens at 7045 South Pulaski.

Jerry R. Badon of 3733 West 66th Street is scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit
Jerry R. Badon
Court Branch 48, 155 West 51st Street, on Thursday, January 23.

Badon allegedly walked into the store at 9:32 a.m. Thursday, January 16, approached a cashier (a 27-year-old Chicago Lawn man) with his hand in his coat pocket and said, "I'm about to make your day very bad. This is a stick-up. I've got a gun. I want you to put all the money in the bag. Put it on the counter and walk towards the back of the store. Don't make a commotion."

The cashier did as instructed, putting nearly $600 cash in a plastic bag. As he passed the camera counter, he told a co-worker (a 44-year-old West Lawn woman), "I just got robbed. He said he had a gun." The co-worker and an assistant manager (a 44-year-old Scottsdale man) then followed the robber out the door and captured a cell phone image of the license plate on his car, a black Honda.

Police responding to the incident ran a plate check and traced the vehicle to Badon. They drove to his house, and police said that Badon's wife let them in, reportedly saying that Badon was in the basement. Police said he matched the description provided by Walgreens' staff, he was taken into custody and positively identified by the cashier. His car was impounded.
