Crime News Update


Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A knife-wielding thug robbed the Little Caesars pizzeria at 7963 S. Cicero at about 1 p.m.
Sunday, April 19. Police said he ordered a pizza, jumped over the counter, brandished a kitchen knife and then took cash from the cash register. An alert put out to the press by CPD did not disclose how much cash he stole. The criminal is described as a black man in his mid 20s, about 5-foot-11, 180-200 pounds, wearing a black skull cap, a black-and-white patterned jacket, and dark jeans. Anyone with useful information to share about the crime or the offender should call CPD Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8382.

Burglars pried open the rear door of Kwik Mart, 4047 W. 79th St., and stole about $20,000 worth of lottery tickets, 82 cartons of cigarettes and $500 cash. The crime occurred at 2:11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21 and was reported to police about five hours later by a manager, a 42-year-old man.

Two thugs robbed the Family Dollar store at 5711 W. 63rd St. at 10:37 a.m. Tuesday, April 21. One offender walked in and accosted a clerk—a 19-year-old Gage Park woman—and demanded cash from the register, while the other offender stood at the front door as a lookout. The clerk complied and gave the robber about $100 cash. The offenders then fled on foot. They were described as white men wearing dark clothes, black face masks, dark hoodies and black gloves.

In what police are calling a theft, two men accosted a 60-year-old woman on the 5800 block of West 63rd Place, demanded that she hand over her purse, and then took it as she complied. The crime occurred at 1:59 p.m. Wednesday, April 22. Stolen were a black Coach purse, a cell phone, an iPad, credit cards and $10 cash. The offenders were described as white men age 18-25, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds.

Two West Lawn women, 21 and 46 years of age, were robbed at gunpoint as they walked down a sidewalk near 69th Place and Lawndale at 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 21. The victims said they were approached by two men, one of whom said, “Get on the ground. Don’t do anything stupid. I don’t want to shoot your ass tonight.” The victims complied and were robbed of two cell phones, a wallet, $60 cash and a black Adidas duffel bag with green lettering. The offenders then ran away east on 69th Place. They were described as black men between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, dark complexion and black hair.

Two West Lawn men, 21 and 44 years of age, were robbed at gunpoint as they worked on a car on the street near 72nd and Avers, at 9 p.m. Friday, April 24. The victims told police that two offenders walked up, put a gun to their heads and demanded money. He then struck both in the head with the gun, causing them to fall to the ground. Stolen were two wallets. The robbers were described as black men age 21-25, 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, dark complexion, wearing dark clothes. One of the victims was transported via ambulance to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

A 38-year-old West Elsdon woman told police that burglars broke into her home near 52nd and Springfield and stole a tablet computer, a video game console and two passports. She discovered the crime when she came home at 6 a.m. Friday, April 24.

Burglars forced open the rear door of a home near 54th and Long and stole a gold chain with a cross, as well as a gold necklace with a heart pendant. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 55-year-old woman, when she came home from work at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23.
