Westmont Man Charged With Shooting Off-Duty Cop at 63rd/Nashville

Mario Froylan
Chicago Police officials hosted a late-afternoon press conference at headquarters Saturday to discuss details of their capture of a man who they say is a gangbanger from suburban Westmont (27-year-old Mario Froylan) in connection with Monday's shooting of an off-duty police officer in the Clearing neighborhood near 63rd and Nashville.

Officials said that at the time of the shooting, Froylan was on parole in connection with "federal narcotics charges" and has nine previous arrests in Chicago.

CPD Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy gave quite a bit of credit to the Summit Police Department in the case and invited Summit PD Chief Les Peterson and Officer Joe Flinchum to stand with him and offer a few comments. Summit became involved when Froylan allegedly sped away from the crime scene and drove to a relative's house in Summit.

McCarthy shows how bullets hit the officer's wrist and chest.
McCarthy also gave a good deal of credit to CPD detectives and others who worked on the case, and he pointed out the role of technology in helping connect the dots.

He said that the case investigation "is still ongoing" and that police are "still recovering evidence as we speak."

McCarthy said that between the off-duty officer and the shooter, 10 shots were fired and that both the officer and his two-year-old child (seated in the car) were extremely fortunate that the situation did not turn out worse. "There was a bullet hole through a window in his car, right in the vicinity of where the child was," he noted.

The child, he added, was not physically injured and appears to be in good spirits, "bouncing off the wall like any other two-year-old would be doing."

McCarthy said the off-duty officer still has pain in his wrist but is anxious to return to duty because he is concerned about his partner in the CPD Seventh District---dedication McCarthy described as "overwhelming."

The Southwest Chicago Post attended the press conference. Something you won't get anywhere else---15 minutes of the press conference---posted below.

    1. I know Mario Froylan. He's a good guy who has had a rough life but all this talk about him being a Latin King is bullshit! My Name is Justin Wright and I was a Latin King yrs ago but i know who is and who ain't a King, And Mario is NOT a Latin King!! He knows alot of Kings but he isn't a "gang member".. Im not saying what he's being charged with is right because it's not! But don't be so quick to rush to judgment without knowing all the facts first. There's 2 sides to every story and so far I see a big lie coming from the police! It's gotta make you wonder why are they lying about him being a Latin King?
