Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

   In what may be related crimes, two men told police that their locked storage units at United
6201 S. Harlem
Storage, 6201 S. Harlem, were broken into recently.
   The first victim, a 55-year-old Chicago Lawn man, told police that he discovered at 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 12 that four tires and four rims had been stolen.
   Five hours later, the second victim, a 60-year-old Rosemont man, discovered that an estimated $5,000 worth of power tools was stolen from his storage unit.

   An employee of Clearing Funeral Home & Cremation, 5800 W. 63rd St., told police that a burglar had broken into a side window and stolen a carton of Marlboro cigarettes and an estimated $38 in change. The crime was discovered at 9:08 a.m. Friday, March 14. Police noted that the business had also been burglarized on Feb. 24, and that the business owner offered police the name of a man he suspects committed the break-ins.

   A 93-year-old West Elsdon man was robbed of his wallet moments after he parked his car in his garage near 59th and Keeler at about 7 p.m. Friday, March 14. He told police that a man approached him from behind, knocked him to the ground, grabbed his wallet and fled on foot.
   The thug was described only as a man 20-25 years old, 6’0 to 6’2 and 160-180 pounds, wearing a black jacket and black pants. The victim’s wallet contained $10 cash.

  Burglars entered the side window of a home near 56th and Nagle and stole assorted jewelry and a metal box with collectible coins. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 70-year-old man, when he came home from work at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12.

   Burglars kicked in the service door of a garage near 60th and Menard and stole a TV, a refrigerator and assorted tools. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 40-year-old woman, at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 12.

   Burglars kicked in the service door of a garage near 46th and Keating and stole assorted tools. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 28-year-old woman, at 7:30 a.m. Friday, March 14.

   Burglars forced open the rear door of a home near 57th Place and Pulaski and stole assorted jewelry. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 72-year-old woman, at 2 p.m. Friday, March 14.

   Burglars pried open the rear door of a home near 52nd and Kenneth and assorted jewelry, three men’s watches, a cell phone and $30 in coins. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 41-year-old man, at 8 a.m. Friday, March 14.

   Burglars forced open the service door of a garage near 46th and Keeler and stole a bicycle and a 35-pound bag of kitty litter. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 45-year-old man, at 7:17 p.m. Wednesday, March 12.
