Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A trio of bandits robbed the T-Mobile store at 6630 S. Pulaski at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19. According to the three clerks on duty (21-, 25- and 27-year-old women), the robbers made off with a cell phone and a cash register with an undisclosed amount of cash inside, moments after one of them hit a clerk in the head with the barrel of a gun after she activated a panic alarm. They also used pepper spray against the two other clerks. The employees refused medical treatment. The robbers fled north on Pulaski in a two-tone gray van. They are described as black men age 16-25, 5’10 and 140 pounds.

A 49-year-old Archer Heights man told police that he was robbed inside a business near Archer and Kilpatrick at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. The victim said that one of the two bandits put a gun to his back as they stole his cell phone and $400 cash before fleeing. The robbers are described as a black man age 25 and 6’0 and a black woman age 25, 5’5 and 110, black hair and medium complexion.

In what police are calling a gang-related incident, a 26-year-old Back of the Yards man was robbed at gunpoint in an alley behind 4832 S. Tripp at 12:22 p.m. Sunday, April 20. The victim told police that he was at the location to respond to a Facebook ad regarding the sale of a black BMW auto.

Instead, the trio asked if he was a gang member and then robbed him of a cell phone, a book bag and $570 cash. Descriptions of the robbers—two young men and a young woman—were sketchy, according to a CPD incident report.

Burglars forced open the overhead door and service door of a garage near 56th and Moody and stole a dirt bike, assorted power tools, and assorted CDs. The crime was discovered at 6 a.m. Thursday, April 24 for by the victim, a 51-year-old woman.


Burglars opened the service door of a garage near 57th and Kolmar and stole assorted tools. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 51-year-old man, at 7 a.m. Wednesday, April 23.

Burglars entered the back door of an apartment near 53rd and Kenneth and stole a passport, a green card and three watches. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 35-year-old man, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23.

Burglars broke through the rear door of a home near 49th and Kildare and stole a TV and a laptop computer. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 35-year-old man, when he returned from vacation at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 22.

Burglars kicked in the back door of a home near 50th and Kostner and stole a jewelry box filled with jewelry. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 26-year-old woman, at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 21.

Burglars opened the rear door of a house near 69th and Springfield and stole three laptop computers, a Kindle, two iPads and a PlayStation 3 video game console. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 35-year-old woman, at 2:45 p.m. Monday, April 21, when she came home and saw the front door open. Police investigating the crime were told by a neighbor that three men were seen exiting the home and left in a maroon Chevy Monte Carlo. The men were described as black, age 16-20, 5’10 to 6’0 tall.
