Crime News Update

        Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in the western section of the district. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Shot in the arm as he sits in vehicle on Kedvale

23-year-old man was shot in the arm as he rode as a passenger of a vehicle in the 4600 block of South Kedvale at 4:55 p.m. Thursday, November 17. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. Police said the shooter was on foot when he opened fire. No one is in custody.


Traffic stop leads to drug bust
Saucedo Villanueva


A 23-year-old West Lawn man was charged with possession of a controlled substance after he was arrested during a traffic stop at 6400 S. Pulaski at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Oscar Saucedo Villanueva, of the 6200 block of South Kedvale, allegedly was carrying a small amount of cocaine, a CPD spokesman said.

Saucedo Villanueva also was wanted on a warrant, but a CPD spokesman declined to say what jurisdiction issued the warrant or why he was wanted.

Shot in the buttocks as he stands on 47th Street

An 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks as he stood outside in the 4000 block of West 47th Street at 8:10 p.m. Monday, November 14. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. No one is in custody.


Citizen detains man charged with DUI
Lilley


A 69-year-old Chrysler Village man was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident after he was arrested in the 4800 block of West 63rd Street at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.

Richard W. Lilley, of the 5200 block of West 63rd Street, allegedly was involved in a crash near 63rd and Ashland and was followed to 63rd and Cicero, where he was detained by a private citizen until police arrived, a CPD spokesman said.

According to public records, Lilley was arrested by police in June 2018 near 63rd and Latrobe and charged with DUI.




Allegedly pushed woman into wall
Flores


A 50-year-old West Elsdon man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 5600 block of South Keeler at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. 

Alejandro Flores allegedly pushed a 56-year-old woman into a wall during an argument.

According to public records, Flores was arrested by CPD in May 2014 near 60th and Komensky and charged with DUI.



Busted at 7-Eleven

A 40-year-old Chicago Lawn man was charged with retail theft and criminal trespass to land after he was arrested at the 7-Eleven at 4001 W. 59th St. at 4:41 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.
Spivey


Calvin Spivey, of the 6400 block of South Rockwell, allegedly stole merchandise from the store and refused to leave when ordered to do so. A CPD spokesman declined to say what was allegedly stolen.

A charge of aggravated robbery was added because Spivey was pointed out as the bandit who robbed the store, the spokesman said without elaborating. He also was charged with failure to register with police as a sex offender. According to Illinois State Police, when Spivey was 15 years old, he molested a 6-year-old girl.




Claim man carried loaded ghost gun
Garcia

 
An 18-year-old man from suburban Blue Island was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after he was arrested in the 6100 block of South Komensky at 5:24 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17.

Ceasar J. Garcia, of the 2600 block of West Grove, was encountered by officers responding to a “suspicious vehicle” call. A CPD spokesman said officers at the scene found a loaded ghost gun in the vehicle Garcia was in.

A ghost gun is a firearm made from assembled parts and is not traceable by law enforcement authorities because it bears no serial number, as would a gun manufactured in an accredited facility.


Say man broke bus window

A 42-year-old Southeast Side man was charged with criminal damage to property after he was arrested on the street at 4600 S. Cicero at 1:55 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. Navacheo O. Fields, of the 2100 block of East 97th Street, allegedly broke the window of a CTA bus while he was fighting with a woman, a CPD spokesman said.



Charge man with domestic battery
Vargas-Andrade


A 22-year-old Scottsdale man was charged with domestic battery after he arrested at his home in the 4600 block of West 82nd Street at 11:53 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7. 

Christopher Vargas-Andrade allegedly grabbed a 26-year-old woman by the face during an argument. A charge of possession of a controlled substance was added after police reportedly found a small amount of illegal drugs on Vargas-Andrade. 

According to public records, Vargas-Andrade has been arrested three times by CPD since 2020 on charges that included drinking alcohol on the public way, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and obstructing identification.



Say man damaged door, threatened woman
Hill


A 43-year-old Ashburn man was charged with criminal damage to property after he was arrested at his home in the 3700 block of West 79th Place at 7:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10.

Richard D. Hill allegedly kicked and damaged doors during an argument with a 44-year-old woman.

A charge of assault was added because Hill allegedly said, “Bitch, I’ll kill you” to the woman.



Convicted felon hit with weapons charge

A 38-year-old man from suburban Evergreen Park was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon and illegal possession of ammunition after he was arrested in the alley behind 8509 S. Pulaski at 7:28 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12.
Martinez


Daniel Martinez, of the 9100 block of South Pulaski, was encountered by officers responding to a “suspicious person” call to 911. A CPD spokesman said Martinez was found to be carrying a handgun and ammunition.

According to public records, Martinez has been arrested seven times by CPD since 2016 on such charges as driving on a suspended license, DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, aggravated fleeing, domestic battery, violating an order of protection and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections,  in December 2019 Martinez was sentenced to three years in prison for aggravated fleeing. He was released early, in January 2022. After his arrest on Oct. 12, he was placed back in IDOC custody and is currently at the Stateville Correctional Center.



Charged with shoplifting at Ford City

A 41-year-old Parkview woman was charged with misdemeanor retail theft after she was arrested in a store at Ford City at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11.
Reese


Salina F. Reese, of the 3700 block of West 86th Place, allegedly stole merchandise worth a total of $480 from a store. A CPD spokesman declined to name the store or say exactly what allegedly stolen.

A CPD request to charge Reese with a felony was denied by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to public records, Reese was arrested by CPD in January 2020 near 79th and Halsted and charged with retail theft.



Charge man with domestic battery
Jessup


A 35-year-old West Lawn man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 7200 block of South Millard at 10:38 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. 

Norman GT Jessup allegedly shoved a 29-year-old woman and punched her in the face during an argument.

A CPD spokesman added that both Jessup and the woman suffered cuts as they struggled over a knife.
