Crime News Update

        Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in the western section of the district. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Busted on a gun rap in alley
Moya Monreal


A 25-year-old West Lawn man was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after he was arrested during a traffic stop in an alley near his home in the 3700 block of West 65th Street at 3:24 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.

Jonathan Moya Monreal was allegedly in possession of a handgun.

According to public records, Moya Monreal has been arrested six times by CPD since 2018 on such charges as obstruction of traffic by a motorist, reckless conduct, possession of a controlled substance, possession of ammunition without a FOID card and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

Claim man drove drunk, crashed vehicle

A 29-year-old Chicago Lawn man was charged with DUI, illegally transporting open alcohol in a vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene after he was arrested in front of 3701 W. 59th Street at 11:26 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.
J. Rolando Marquez, of the 5900 block of South Whipple, allegedly was the driver of a vehicle that crashed into two parked vehicles about two hours before he was arrested, a CPD spokesman said, adding that Marquez initially ran away from the scene but returned hours later to retrieve his vehicle.



Traffic stop leads to gun, drug charges
Alcala Gutierrez


A 29-year-old man from suburban Harvey was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance after he was arrested during a traffic stop near 63rd and Hamlin at 3:02 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Gerardo Alcala Gutierrez, of the 15000 block of South Myrtle, reportedly was found in possession a handgun and suspect narcotics, a CPD spokesman said.

According to public records, Alcala Gutierrez has been arrested 11 times by CPD since 2014, on charges that include drinking alcohol on the public way, driving on a suspended license, theft, retail theft, reckless conduct, escaping from a peace officer, battery and aggravated battery.





Claim man hit other man
Morales


A 26-year-old Garfield Ridge man was charged with battery after he was arrested at his home in the 5400 block of South Mulligan at 7:05 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.

Gabriel Morales allegedly hit a 47-year-old man in the head during an argument. A CPD spokesman declined to give further details.

According to public records, Morales has been arrested four times since 2016 on such charges as possession of a marker with intent to deface, as well as criminal defacement of property.





Say man threatened woman
Salas


A 31-year-old Clearing man was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after he was arrested near his home in the 6200 block of West 64th Street at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Jovonie Salas was identified as the man who allegedly approached a home’s window and pointed a gun at a woman in a threatening manner back on Oct. 13, a CPD spokesman said without elaborating.

According to public records, Salas has been arrested three times by CPD since 2014 on charges that included theft and criminal trespass to a vehicle.



Charge man with making ‘pellet gun’ threat
Patel



A 43-year-old West Lawn man was charged with aggravated assault and illegal possession of a pellet gun after he was arrested at his home in the 4600 block of West 63rd Street at 11:32 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.


Rumash K. Patel allegedly used a pellet gun to threaten a 46-year-old woman during an argument.






Charge woman with trespassing
Orcasitas



A 23-year-old Bridgeport woman was charged with criminal trespass to a residence after she was arrested at an apartment building in the 5200 block of South Kildare at 2:48 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Daisy Michelle Orcasitas, of the 3100 block of South May, allegedly was discovered knocking on a third-floor door in the building. A CPD spokesman declined to give further details.



Traffic stop leads to gun charge
Gonzalez


A 25-year-old Scottsdale man was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after he was arrested during a traffic stop in front of 4540 S. Pulaski at 3:37 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4.

Anthony Gonzalez, of the 8300 block of South Kilpatrick, is a valid FOID card holder but was found with a loaded handgun on the floor of the passenger side of his vehicle, a CPD spokesman said.

He also was cited for driving a vehicle with an expired registration and driving a vehicle with a covered license plate.



Charge man in ‘road rage’ incident
Aviles



A 38-year-old Scottsdale man was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after he was arrested in the 5300 block of South Archer at 9:17 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4. 


Anthony G. Aviles, of the 8500 block of South Kostner, allegedly pointedly a gun at a 31-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman during what a CPD spokesman called a road rage incident.

Gonzalez-Mendez



A 22-year-old West Elsdon woman was charged with battery after she was arrested at her home in the 5200 block of Ridgeway at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.


Nolbia Y. Gonzalez-Mendez allegedly punched a 26-year-old woman in the face during an argument.






Say man damaged screen door
Hernandez


A 52-year-old man was charged with criminal damage to property after he was arrested outside a home in the 6700 block of South Karlov at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6.

Jaime E. Hernandez allegedly damaged the side screen door of the home of a 52-year-old man.

According to public records, Hernandez has been arrested 17 times by CPD since 2016 on such charges as possession of a drinking alcohol on the public way (11 times), obstructing identification, possession of a controlled substance, battery, criminal trespass to property and retail theft. A CPD spokesman did not have a home address for Hernandez.



Multiple charges in fight at house
Vlasic



A 63-year-old Garfield Ridge man was charged with assault, battery, domestic battery and violating an order of protection after he was arrested at his home in the 5700 block of South Natchez at 5:10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14.


Daniel P. Vlasic allegedly was involved in an argument and fight with three men ages 43, 46 and 57, a CPD spokesman said while declining to elaborate.

Arrested at the same time was 57-year-old Blanca Jaldin de Moncada, who was charged with battery.



Charge man with domestic battery
Tapia



A 52-year-old Clearing man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 6200 block of South McVicker at 9:59 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. 


Efrain Tapia allegedly punched a 52-year-old woman in the face several times during an argument, CPD spokesman said.




Charge man with aggravated domestic battery
Marin Zapata



A 31-year-old West Elsdon man was charged with aggravated domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 5600 block of South Kostner at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.


Edison A. Marin Zapata allegedly choked a 22-year-old woman during an argument.






Claim man used gun in threat
Alvarez


A 21-year-old Scottsdale man was charged with aggravated assault after he was arrested at his home in the 4000 block of West 82nd Place at 6:21 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Miguel A. Alvarez allegedly used a handgun to threaten a 19-year-old man, a CPD spokesman said.

According to public records, Alvarez was arrested by CPD in September 2019 near 78th and Karlov and charged with illegal possession of a pellet gun.


Traffic stop leads to gun charge

A 31-year-old Garfield Ridge man was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after he was arrested during a traffic stop in front of 4540 S. Pulaski at 12:38 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.
Apolinar Cervantes


Josue N. Apolinar Cervantes, of the 5400 block of South Lockwood, was stopped by officers who observed him drag racing, a CPD spokesman said, although Apolinar Cervantes was not charged with drag racing or reckless driving.

He also was cited for driving an uninsured vehicle and unauthorized parking in a “handicapped” spot.

According to public records, Apolinar Cervantes has been arrested five times since 2014 on such charges as driving on a suspended license, retail theft and possession of a controlled substance.






Allegedly battered woman at Ford City
Locke


A 29-year-old Chicago Lawn man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested in a Ford City parking lot at 1:35 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

Brandon Locke, of the 6400 block of South Claremont, allegedly kicked a 27-year-old woman in the stomach and punched her in the head.

According to public records, Locke has been arrested 10 times by CPD since 2014 on such charges as driving on a suspended license, gambling, theft and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.



Claim man drove stolen vehicle
Lopez


A 24-year-old Brighton Park man was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after he was arrested in the 5500 block of South Central Park at 4:05 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10.

Alexis M. Lopez, of the 3900 block of South Talman, was reportedly driving a stolen vehicle when he hit into a lightpole and crashed into a fence, a CPD spokesman said. 

According to public records, Lopez was arrested by CPD in September 2021 at 200 N. Dearborn and charged with assault, battery and retail theft.



Arrested again at Walgreens

A 52-year-old Back of the Yards man was charged with felony retail theft after he was arrested at the Walgreens at 1614 W. 47th St. at 9:09 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.
Nicholson


Ronald Nicholson, of the 5000 block of South Winchester, allegedly stole more than $300 worth of over-the-counter medication from the store.

According to public records, Nicholson has been arrested 19 times by CPD since 2014 on such charges as obstructing identification, theft, burglary, criminal trespass to property, battery and possession of a controlled substance.

The Nov. 5 incident was the third arrest at the same Walgreens for Nicholson in three months—each time charged with retail theft. In December 2019, Nicholson was arrested twice at the Walgreens at 55th and Kedzie—charged each time with retail theft.
